Costa Rica 2016 Report

Supporting Missionary Lillian Solt at CEDCAS (Health Education and Health Care Center)

The 2016 Costa Rica team consisted of 11 people from Calvary BFC working alongside Chris and Becky Merrick, BFC Mission Project Coordinators, and Saul and David from CEDCAS. CEDCAS is a Spanish acronym for Health Education and Health Care Center. The majority of our time was focused on the interior renovation of the building across the street from the CEDCAS clinic. The building, which had been condemned, is being converted into 3 apartments which will be provided to some of Lillian Solt's key staff as a part of their compensation. Electrical, plumbing, insulating, hanging drywall and spackling dominated our time. One morning we awoke to discover that $1000 worth of power tools had been stolen from the building. After the shock wore off, we prayed for the perpetrators, bought some new tools and got back to work.
On Saturday morning, at The House of Health, we all participated in the weekly activity with approximately 75 kids, ages 5-17, from the Nicaraguan refugee shanty town of Guarari. Dancing to worship music, playing games and, of course, eating lunch were the catalysts that allowed the team members to interact with the kids. This program, along with other programs helping these kids escape poverty, are supported by Calvary's Dare to Care offering.
We had the opportunity to worship at two local churches: Vida Abundante in Heredia and San Tomas also near Heredia. Vida Abundante is very large church while San Tomas has a small congregation. While the style of worship was quite different between the two, we felt welcomed and appreciated the Bible based teaching.
Some down time was also programmed into the week with the team getting a chance to shop for local crafts in downtown San Jose and relax for a day at a resort area on the Pacific coast. And, as with any mission trip, fellowship between members of the team proved to be very rewarding, not just while working, but also at devotions and games in the evening. And of course there was the food! Most meals were prepared by CEDCAS staff and we ate together at CEDCAS, frequently with members of the staff. We also had a few opportunities to eat at local restaurants and enjoyed sampling a variety of local fare.
